Gandia Blasco Group x Kengo Kuma

Architecture, design, craftsmanship and local materials
Thank you for joining us on our visit to the leading event of the habitat in Spain, Habitat Valencia, which took place from 20th to 23rd September as part of the World Design Street Festival on the commemoration of World Design Capital Valencia 2022.
After the warm reception at Fiera Milano Rho last June, the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has designed the Gandia Blasco Group stand at Habitat Valencia to present the latest developments of GANDIABLASCO, GAN and DIABLA for the first time in Spain. The Milan project has been adapted to our space at the Valencian fair without losing the essence of its design, a concept based on sustainability, as well as its vision of craftsmanship and use of local materials.
GANDIABLASCO at Habitat Valencia 2022
ISLABLANCA, one of the new GANDIABLASCO collections by the creative director of the brand José A. Gandía-Blasco Canales, has unveiled its new designs which include a printed glass finish. To do this, Alejandra Gandía-Blasco, artist and deputy creative and communication director of Gandia Blasco Group, has exhibited a selection of her works – color studies from sunsets in different geolocations such as Comporta, a flight to Paris, Playa de San Juan or Ibiza — embodied in printed glass and in an installation in the group’s own space in Habitat Valencia.
GANDIABLASCO also presented ISLA, the award-winning collection by Sebastian Herkner; BOSC, by Made Studio; ONDE, by Luca Nichetto; ONSEN, by the tandem formed by Francesco Meda and David Quincoces; and GB MODULAR, the new line of modular furniture by José A. Gandía-Blasco Canales in which the maximum reduction of wasted material is obtained thanks to the design of a patented joining system.
GAN at Habitat Valencia 2022
On GAN´s behalf, it presented its innovative handcrafted rugs and spaces collections: GOZ, designed by Kengo Kuma and shortlisted by the Dezeen Awards; PLASTIC RIVERS, created by Álvaro Catalán de Ocón and recognized with a NYCxDESIGN 2022 Award; REVERSIBLE, by Charlotte Lancelot; and THE CROCHET COLLECTION, by Clara von Zweigbergk. Under the guidance of GAN’s creative director, Mapi Millet, those who visited Hábitat Valencia were able to discover a representative selection of conscious designs that combine craftsmanship, innovation and environmental responsibility, as well as the new possibilities for customization offered through the updated GAN Custom program. Different designs by GARDEN LAYERS, by Patricia Urquiola, and DIAMOND, by Charlotte Lancelot, have been present equipping the outdoor environments of GANDIABLASCO.
Diabla at Habitat Valencia 2022
Finally, Diabla´s latest proposals to enjoy the outdoors have been integrated into the ephemeral architecture of master Kengo Kuma, standing out for their sobriety with a touch of color: COSTURAS by Teresa Sapey + Partners – finalist for the NYCxDESIGN 2022 Awards -; CALCETÍN, PATOSO – winner of a NYCxDESIGN 2022 Award and DNA Paris Design Awards 2022 -, VALENTINA UP, – winner of the 6th Iberoamerican Design Biennial Award in the Industrial Design category a Matadero Madrid – and PLISY – winner of the DNA Paris Design Awards 2019 – all of them by Alejandra Gandía-Blasco; 356 by José A. Gandía-Blasco Canales and Pablo Gironés; GRILL by Mut Design; LILLY by Democràcia Estudio; and the TRIP extension by José A. Gandía-Blasco and Borja García.
Gandia Blasco Group x Kengo Kuma at Habitat Valencia 2022
Inspired by our Mediterranean roots, Kengo Kuma has created a bond between craftsmanship, design and nature from materials from Valencia, bamboo plants and architectural concepts which have long formed a part of tradition Japanese sudare, suspended in the stand forming layers as lattices and creating an organic journey through the three brands of the group. From the global epicenter of design, our space has taken shape thanks to the reuse of the Valencian wooden shutters that were used in the original construction in Milan and sourced from a local supplier in the vicinity of Gandia Blasco Group’s headquarters in Ontinyent (Valencia, Spain). The project was acclaimed in Milan last June and was recognized by the ICONIC AWARDS of the German Design Council in the categories of best ephemeral architecture and innovative materials.
The stand also featured the installation of six Estela lamps, created by Mayice Studio for LZF, a hypnotic LED light capsule handcrafted from hand-blown glass and a wooden veneer.
Also in collaboration with LZF we have celebrated the union between design and craftsmanship next to the emblematic works of classical art of the San Pío V Museum in NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM. A unique exhibition organized at the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia (San Pío V, 9. Valencia, Spain) with the support of World Design Capital Valencia 2022 and Feria Habitat Valencia.
