“When designing, I don't think about any style in particular, but about concepts and sensations, in the collective imagination that people share. An analogy occurs to me with abstract art. Every painter, before ending up in abstraction, has gone through a figurative phase, interpreting reality as they see it. As you mature and learn, you tend to abstract from that reality because you already recognize the essentials of each form, you can break it down, and separate the superfluous from the essential. I like to think of design in the same way, first conforming to the materials and then the shape, removing the frills”
