RESULTS OF THE 10TH INTERNATIONAL
OUTDOOR FURNITURE DESIGN COMPETITION
“The cultural history of toys clearly illustrates that play does not just owe its raison d’être to the spirit of childhood but also reflects the construction of society.” Toys, Walter Benjamin.
We are delighted to present the winners of the 10th International Outdoors Furniture Competition, the theme for which was to design an outdoors swing. Because play is not just for children …
We would like to thank all those restless creative people who were inspired to enter. We received more than 120 projects from Spain, Singapore, Mexico and Canada. Outdoor wings as diverse as the number of cultures and ways of living there are in the world.
With each edition we try to provide a catalyst for creativity and emerging talent all around the world, providing an opportunity to awaken the inventiveness of young creatives and to rethink the outdoor spaces that surround us with exterior furniture that allows us to inhabit them in a different way. An experience that crosses design boundaries to include all the disciplines present in our day to day; architecture, landscape and art.
This is only possible thanks to the professional cultural collaboration that makes up our selected jury each year, drawn from different backgrounds: art, architecture, gastronomy, landscape, hospitality, education …
Two weeks ago, Jose Gandia-Blasco and GANDIABLASCO team had the pleasure of welcoming to the casa GANDIABLASCO;
Manuel Aires Mateus, Architect with the Aires Mateus practice
Carlos Urroz, Director of ARCO
Carla Khevenhueller, Landscape Architect Fernando Caruncho collaborator
Kike Sarasola, President of Room Mate Hotels
Because “maintaining our balance on a swing is not exactly easy,” and after a measured deliberation the jury voted unanimously for the following Prize winners and mentions:
Álvaro Olivares Peralta
Esther Sanchis Llopis
Eduardo Sancho Calzada
“A frame, a place, a piece to contemplate where the landscape becomes entangled with the light movements of the swing. A figure composed of minimal lines that frames infinity.”
Maria Franco Llinares
Denis Calle Facal
Amaia Arana Corral
Esther Eskisabel De Juan
Maddi Armendariz Txurruka
“Frame is a minimally expressed swing, where the rectangular frame structure provides the main focus. An elemental volume which reflects the image of the GANDIABLASCO brand, reinterpreting the vernacular architecture of Ibiza in a contemporary manner, resolving the structural challenges and framing a specific natural setting to create a dialogue with the outdoors. The light seesawing movement, a consequence of the design, serves to highlight the sensation of serenity and much sought-after calm, bringing to mind the waves on the shore or the soft countryside breeze.”
Michela Fiorentino Capoferri
“My refuge is too small, but its windows open onto a much bigger and marvellous world.” Confucius
Diego Civera Lafuente
“As well as providing a functional response PLAYALFARUM was also conceived as a sculpture.”
Íñigo Andrés Gutiérrez Velez
Laura Lage Fojo
Maria Balbás Matesanz
“Life is too short for wearing boring clothes.”
“A practical and accessible accessory, designed for a wide sector of the population given its unisex design it’s suitable for anyone whatever their age. Bringing together fun, relaxation, gravity and elegance.”
Pablo Martínez Valverde
“The basic structure of wave is made up of different size steel profiles, welded and painted matt white.”
Bruno Díaz Álvarez
“RED is an outdoor swing, a piece of furniture defined by clean geometric lines inspired by drying fishing net structures.
Its design is an evolution of the swing as, in essence a place of relaxation, a gentle swaying movement.”
Thanks to all participants for your efforts and ingenuity.
